The Hadrian's Wall

An - in many ways - longish piece of architecture

construction started in ad 122, widely finished in ad 128

120 km long and ca 4 metres high, leading from nowadays' Newcastle on the East coast to the West coast near Bowness in Cumbria (today's Lake District)

every 8 km there was a large fort which could hold up to 1,000 Romans

about every 1,500 there was a milecastle for up to 30 soldiers

between 2 milecastles there were 2 turrets with signal flags or fires in case of an attack and as a shelter for the sentries

15.000 Roman soldier guarded the wall (what a waste of human ressources!)
